Sustainability

Metsä Kolo is a responsible operator

The company's values and basic idea are responsibility, sustainable development and the desire to contribute to the well-being of all of us.

Ecology, accountability and natural values are our thing and firm principles. The whole concept of our company is intertwined around these values and consists of a comprehensive package of environmentally friendly products and services that we offer for the joy of our customers.

In our materials we favour good quality, Finnish options. Our biggest investment is Finnish textiles, beds, futons and bedclothes: duvets and pillows of Finnsheep wool as well as horsehair futons from a Finnish family company , Finlayson flax linen, linen towels by Lapuan Kankurit as well as design beds by MATRI.With these we offer an exceptionally clean, breathable and safe sleep environment for the time of your holiday. We caress your skin and hair with natural cosmetics from a local natural cosmetics brand (Rubus Cosmetics). Our sauna soap does not contain synthetic chemicals, perfumes, parabens, plastics or petrochemicals. Our cleaning and laundry detergents are also free of toxins and synthetic fragrances. The laundry is dried naturally by the power of the sun and wind without wasting electricity and consuming textiles unnecessarily.

At the dining table, we prefer locally produced ingredients as well as organic food - where possible. We greatly value groundwater that is available fresh in our cleaned and renovated well in the yard.

Old things and recycling instead of buying new stuff are valued in Metsä Kolo. All purchases and their environmental impact are weighed carefully: lifespan, durability, transportation, jobs etc. We value timeless and durable Finnish design highly. So our tables are decorated with Marimekko's lovely tablecloths, so that our guests of all ages would enjoy staying in our holiday environment. We employ local people, since co-operation with the villagers will implant our operations firmly in their neighbourhood and hearts. We value  timeless and durable Finnish design. Our tables are decorated with Marimekko's up-lovely tablecloths. The floors of our cottages are decorated with handmade domestic rag rugsWe employ local people, since co-operation with the villagers will implant our operations firmly in their neighbourhood and hearts.

Our responsibly managed forest property offsets the travel emissions of our guests. We will be happy to tell you more about forest management. We use eco-electricity. We recycle waste (paper, cardboard, glass, metal) and compost biowaste. The fireplaces and sauna are heated with wood from our own forest. In all our activities, we ensure that our environment will stay clean also for the next generations and that it will be nice to live in Saariharju and visit it now and in the future.

The national principles of sustainable tourism prepared by Visit Finland are visible in our operating environment.

We prefer high quality and
ecological, Finnish materials

Finnish design beds

We want to pamper our guests with luxurious nighttime sleep, so we have chosen Hilja beds by the Finnish family business MATRI. The beds have been handmade in their own factory using 100% natural materials. MATRI also has material safety at heart, which is why all of their products use only environmentally friendly, certified materials produced in Europe. This ensures an exceptionally clean, breathable and safe sleeping environment.

Horsehair futons

We want to pamper our guests with soothing sleep. The futon mattress gives the body proper support so that the muscles do not have to tense while sleeping. The perfectly breathable mattress is made only of pure natural materials. With horsehair, a very durable and airy layer can be created in the futon, which brings a little surface softness together with the layers of organic cotton and wool. The futons are handmade in Pori by the same family business where the ecological blankets and pillows we have chosen also come from.

Duvets and pillows

We want to pamper our guests with natural Finnish products. Duvets and pillows of Finnsheep wool are an ecological choice, as they biodegrade in soil. Wool is inherently fireproof so it does not require the addition of fire protection chemicals and is also otherwise a chemical-free product. The bedding does not make you sweat even in hot weather as it efficiently evaporates the moisture it absorbs and stays comfortably warm in the cold and damp. Our impressive bedding is handmade in Finland by the company called Porin Villa ja Peite, using surplus raw materials produced nearby.

Duvet covers and pillowcases

We want to pamper our guests with soft linen sheets. The Finnish Jesus linen sheets of Finlayson are made to last, experience and see a lot, even over generations. As a material, linen is a beautiful, durable and environmentally friendly natural fiber. As a fabric it is heavy and smooth and it hangs in a stiffer way. Breathable linen retains its coolness when it's hot and warms even in cooler conditions. The comfortableness and softness of the fabric only increase with washing. Finlayson wanted to make the most durable sheets in the world, for which the Shroud of Turin - survived to this day - was used as a model.

Towels

We want to pamper our guests with the best towels. The weaving at Lapuan Kankurit, the manufacturer of our towels, is of Nordic design, inspired by Finland's pure and rugged nature. The fourth generation family business weaves responsibly, while respecting the environment. Only natural raw materials such as linen and wool are used. High-quality textiles last for decades when properly cared for.

OWN soap

We want to pamper our guests with the best hair and skin care product. Inspired by the natural cosmetics company Rubus Cosmetics in our neighborhood, we have developed Metsä Kolo's very own organic soap, naturally without synthetic chemicals, perfumes, parabens, plastics and petrochemicals. Instead, our soap is made up of pure, authentic ingredients, such as a variety of organic vegetable oils. The active ingredients of the soap come from nearby nature, it has been developed by people in Ranua and the product is also handmade in our own village in Saariharju - so it is a real local product! The soap has Metsä Kolo's own logo of the reindeer antlers, and in the future it can also be purchased from us to be taken home and given as gifts.

Rag rugs

We want to pamper our guests with happy rag rugs. Our credit weavers Iris Sjöström from the Swedish-speaking village of Spjutsund on the Sipoo coast has also woven used sheets and clothes into our Alpine home. His wonderful color combinations convinced even Iittala's buyers, and this is how the international Iittala rug found in Metsä Kolo was born.
