Authentic Lapland Experience

M2 – A Traditional Log Cabin in the Quiet of Lapland

Make yourself a coffee, settle in, and let the day unfold at its own pace.

M2 is a traditional, mid-sized log cabin on the shores of Lake Saarijärvi, created for those who long for peace, time together, and the simple pleasures of Finnish cabin life.

The cabin is particularly well suited to two adults and two children. Its cosy living area invites you to spend time together, prepare a simple meal, or linger over a long, unhurried evening. The wood-burning stove brings warmth and atmosphere, while the private terrace looks out over the lake and the surrounding peatland landscape. Take a moment to sit back, enjoy the view, and let the silence settle around you.

The beds in this cabin have a story of their own.

I made the pine beds by hand, using timber from our very own forest. They are topped with horsehair futons — a meeting of natural Finnish materials and craftsmanship with a sleeping tradition familiar from Japan. The warmth of the wood, natural materials, and carefully chosen bedding make a good night’s sleep part of the Metsä Kolo experience.

The little kitchen has what you need to make your morning coffee and prepare simple meals. As evening draws in, the wood-burning stove creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere. A traditional wood-fired lakeside sauna is also part of the cabin experience.

A quieter side of Lapland

Metsä Kolo is not a crowded resort. We have just three cabins, surrounded by the northern landscape, and we believe there is something special about keeping things small and personal.

Here, you can step away from busy tourist destinations and discover a quieter kind of Lapland. In winter, pristine snow transforms the landscape, and the deep stillness of the north invites you to breathe a little more slowly. Far from the bright lights of cities, the night sky can reveal its stars without the usual glow of urban light pollution. In summer, the landscape is filled with the remarkable brightness of northern nights.

This is a place for people who value quiet over crowds, authenticity over mass tourism, and the care that comes with staying somewhere run by real people who know and love the place.

Listen to the forest. Take a deep breath. Let your thoughts grow quieter. Sometimes the best holiday is simply having nowhere you need to be and nothing you need to do.

Welcome to M2, and welcome to Metsä Kolo — a little closer to nature, a little further from the noise of everyday life.

M2 - Plan your perfect escape – everything you need in one place

Some beds have a story to tell.

At M2, I made the pine beds by hand, using wood from our very own forest. Resting on them are horsehair futons — inspired by a Japanese sleeping tradition, yet crafted from Finnish natural materials with a distinctly local touch.

The beds are arranged together as a double, offering a cosy retreat for two adults. In the living area, the sofa bed provides two additional sleeping places for children.

The scent and warmth of timber, the honest feel of natural materials, and carefully chosen bedding create a sleeping experience that belongs to Metsä Kolo. No grand gestures, no unnecessary frills — just thoughtful craftsmanship, a peaceful setting, and the pleasure of sinking into bed after a day in the northern outdoors.

Sleep deeply. Wake gently. Let the forest set the pace.

The cosy kitchen is made for slow mornings, a fresh cup of coffee and simple meals enjoyed at your own pace.

You’ll find a fridge-freezer, a small hob, a coffee machine, a kettle, a thermos and a microwave. Everything you need for preparing simple meals is at hand, along with tableware, lovely wine glasses and a carafe for those unhurried evenings.

The compact living area brings everything together: a dining table, a comfortable sofa bed, a wardrobe and a rocking chair invites you to sit back, relax and enjoy the quiet. Also a TV for relaxed evenings indoors after a day exploring the northern outdoors.

Come as a guest, leave as a friend.

Metsä Kolo is a small, family-run business, and we love sharing the place we call home. Whenever we’re around, we’re happy to answer your questions, share local knowledge and help you discover experiences that suit you. These might include a visit to a reindeer farm, a husky safari, or help arranging equipment rentals such as skis, snowshoes, a canoe or fishing rods.

We’re always glad to share our favourite local tips and help you discover a more personal side of Lapland, away from the busiest tourist destinations.

Food & Dining

The cabin is self-catering, giving you the freedom to prepare your own meals whenever you feel like it.

Depending on availability, I may also be able to prepare breakfast, lunch or dinner for you. Or, for something a little more personal, we could even cook together in my traditional wooden home.

Meals are arranged individually and must be agreed upon in advance. Just get in touch, and we’ll see what might be possible during your stay.

As evening settles over the lake and the air grows cooler, light the wood-burning stove and let its gentle crackle and comforting warmth fill the cabin. We heat our cabins with firewood from our own forest, and an electric heater is available when you need a little extra warmth.

Firewood is included in your stay. Each log takes time and hard work to prepare, so we appreciate it being used thoughtfully.

Every other evening, your stay includes a sauna session in our traditional wood-fired log sauna right by the lake. Feel the warmth of the löyly — the soft, enveloping steam of a Finnish sauna — before stepping outside for a breath of fresh northern air. When conditions allow, you might even enjoy a refreshing dip in the lake or an ice hole in winter.

Sauna times are arranged with us during your stay. By prior agreement, you may also be able to heat the sauna yourself. We’re always happy to introduce you to Finnish sauna traditions and share a few tips on sauna etiquette.

Some evenings call for nothing more than a warm stove, the soothing rhythm of the sauna, and the quiet of the forest beyond your door.

At Metsä Kolo, even the simplest things are part of the experience. Drinking water for your cabin comes from our own well in the yard, carried in a traditional Finnish milk churn.

It is a small but special part of authentic Finnish cabin life, where everyday tasks follow a gentler rhythm and invite you to slow down.

Not everything here happens at the touch of a button — and that is part of the charm of Metsä Kolo.

Start the morning with a coffee on your private terrace, take in the lake views, or simply sit back and listen to the sounds of silence. The terrace has a table, chairs and a bench — a lovely spot to enjoy the changing light and the unhurried pace of life at Metsä Kolo.

And then there’s the outdoor toilet — with a view of its own! Built from wood and located right on your terrace, this traditional composting dry toilet has two windows overlooking the lake. It’s a little different from what you might be used to, but that’s part of the charm of Finnish cabin life.

No flushing, no unnecessary fuss — just a simple, thoughtfully made solution and a lake view that makes even this everyday moment a little more memorable.

Capacity & Sleeping

Cabin M2 is particularly well suited to two adults and two children. The handmade pine beds, crafted from wood from our own forest, are arranged together as a double bed. They cannot be separated, as the cabin is too narrow for a twin-bed arrangement. The sofa bed in the living area provides additional sleeping space for two children.

Sauna & Facilities

Your stay includes a sauna session every other evening in our traditional wood-fired log sauna by the lake.

Please note that the cabin has no indoor bathroom, shower or toilet, and no running tap water. The outdoor composting dry toilet has a view of the lake. Fresh drinking water is carried from our own well in the yard.

Parking & Car Heating

Parking is available near the cabin, and an electrical outlet for an engine heater is available during colder months.

Groceries & Kitchen Essentials

The nearest grocery store is in the centre of Ranua, approximately 29 km away.

The kitchen is equipped for preparing simple meals and includes a fridge-freezer, a small hob, a coffee machine, a kettle, a thermos and a microwave. You’ll also find tableware, salt, pepper, dish soap and coffee filters.

We kindly ask you to sort your waste during your stay. Separate collection is available for compostable waste, glass, cardboard and paper, metal, plastic and mixed waste.

Water & Everyday Cabin Life

Our drinking water comes from our own well in the yard and is carried to the cabin in a traditional Finnish milk churn. There is no running tap water, so collecting water is part of the experience of traditional Finnish cabin life.

The outdoor composting dry toilet is a simple, practical part of staying close to nature.

Bringing Your Dog

Dogs are welcome in M2! Please bring your own dog bed, as the beds and sofa are reserved for human guests.

We ask you to pick up after your dog and dispose of the waste in the designated composting system. Guests often walk barefoot around the yard and pick berries there, so keeping the surroundings clean matters to everyone.

Our large, playful dog, Tove, lives in the main house and may be around the yard, too.

Horsehair futons

Haluamme hemmotella vieraitamme rauhottavilla unilla.

Duvets and pillows

Haluamme hemmotella vieraitamme kotimaisilla luonnontuotteilla.

Duvet covers and pillowcases

Haluamme hemmotella vieraitamme pehmoisilla pellavalakanoilla.
Finlayson halusi valmistaa maailman kestävimmät lakanat, joihin he ottivat mallia tähän päivään säilyneestä Torinon käärinliinasta.

Towels

Haluamme hemmotella vieraitamme parhailla pyyheliinoilla.
