centres and the usual travel routes. You can get here without your own car, too — and sometimes the journey itself becomes one of the best stories of your holiday.

I once travelled all the way from an Austrian Alpine village to Ranua using public transport — and ended up hitchhiking the final stretch! I even wrote a blog post about the journey. A sense of adventure, curiosity and a little flexibility can take you a long way. And the people you meet along the way — what a fun!

Read my travel story from the Alps to Lapland – Mit Zug und Bus nach Lappland (in German).

By train, you can travel to Oulu, Kemi or Rovaniemi, for example, and continue your journey from there.

And here’s some exciting news for rail travellers! Since August 2026, a new passenger train connection has linked Oulu with Tornio and Haparanda in Sweden, reopening the cross-border railway connection after almost 40 years. From Haparanda, you can continue through Sweden, with connections onwards towards Stockholm and Central Europe. This makes it possible to plan a journey from Oulu to Germany by train, changing trains along the way. Connections and timetables need careful planning, so check your route before setting off. Find details of the new connection on the VR website.

There is still some distance to cover from the railway stations to Metsä Kolo: approximately 112 km from Rovaniemi station, 149 km from Kemi station and 173 km from Oulu station. These distances are approximate and depend on the route you choose. For bus connections, check the Matkahuolto journey planner.

The nearest airports are Rovaniemi (approximately 120 km away), Kuusamo (approximately 118 km) and Oulu (approximately 187 km).

The final stretch from Ranua to Saariharju is 29 km, so it’s worth planning this part of your journey in advance. Tell us about your travel plans, and we’ll be happy to help you work out the best way to reach us.

By the time you arrive at Metsä Kolo, you’ve left the rush of everyday life behind.
